Homemade Waffle Ice Cream Cones.

The best waffle cones I have ever tasted

One of the best scents in the world is the smell of freshly-made waffle cones surrounding an ice cream shop. There’s something about the smell that is just so comforting, nostalgic, and tempting. Even if I’m not in the mood for ice cream, the scent immediately makes me want to buy a giant cone of fudge ice cream in a chocolate-dipped walnut waffle cone…especially when they’re made fresh.

I don’t know about you, but instead of waiting to go to an ice cream parlor to get that cone, I was determined to bring one of my favorite smells to my own kitchen! These Homemade Waffle Ice Cream Cones are better than any store-bought ice cream cone and even the ones I used to get from a local ice cream shop called Nana’s.

The best part is that you can add cocoa powder to make them chocolate cones, mini chocolate chips for chocolate chip waffle cones, or even fresh fruit for a tart waffle cone to pair with chocolate ice cream (imagine raspberry and chocolate combination!) or refreshing sorbet 🙂

Homemade Waffle Ice Cream Cones.

  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons white, granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Toasted walnuts, chopped
  • Mini chocolate chips
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg and sugar. Add the cinnamon and salt. Mix in the cooled melted butter, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Fold in the flour, but be careful not to overmix. Cover the bowl, and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat a pizzelle maker. Add about 1 tablespoon of batter to each pizzelle, and cook for 30 seconds or until pizzelles are just cooked. Immediately remove from pizzelle maker, and fold into a cone shape. Hold the cone shape in place until the cones harden, about 2 minutes. Repeat for all of the batter. Allow cones to cool before dipping in melted chocolate. After dipping in chocolate, immediately dip in rainbow sprinkles, toasted walnuts, chocolate chips, or your choice of toppings (the cones are my favorite just plain!). Enjoy with your favorite ice cream 🙂
